The CHS Foundation is an independent, private foundation supported by CHS Inc., a leading energy, grains and foods company.
"As the tragic aftermath of the earthquake, tsunami and related events in Japan unfolds, we recognize the tremendous need for both immediate assistance and long-term support," said William Nelson, president, CHS Foundation. "These two organizations provide the CHS Foundation and CHS employees with an opportunity to address both needs."
Nelson noted that the American Red Cross was selected due to its well-respected humanitarian relief efforts in the aftermath of natural disasters. The contribution to CDF's Co-op Emergency Fund will provide assistance for cooperatives in need in the hard-hit region which has a significant agricultural economy.
"Cooperatives in the U.S. and Japan have a long history together and we are gratified to be able to help at this very difficult time. We also want to show our support to those in Japan with whom we have long-standing relationships," Nelson said.
