MV Vega Rose vaia G3 in the Trois Riveres Port

TROIS-RIVIÈRES, QUÉBEC, CANADA —G3 Canada Ltd. loaded a record tonnage of 48,069 tonnes corn at the Trois-Rivières Port on June 15. The previous record in Trois-Rivières was set by the M/V St-Matthew in 2004, loading 41,747 tonnes. The new record is due in part to the high-water depth this year, currently measuring 12 meters rather than 10.7 meters, or 1.2 meters above normal. The configuration of the M/V Vega Rose is also ideal for maximizing cargo intake. The vessel was loading grain received from local producers.

Gaétan Boivin, president and chief executive officer of the TRPA, explained that all the necessary conditions were met for setting this new record at the Trois-Rivières facilities, in operation since 1936.

“Before loading a vessel, the first requirement is to have a buyer interested in a large quantity of grain, in this case corn, and the product must be sufficiently available from local producers to supply G3,” Boivin said. “The port facilities must also have the logistical capacity to receive the trucks carrying the maize to be shipped abroad. To load the vessel’s five holds, around 1,300 trucks were required over a relatively short period of two to three weeks.”

Built in 2007, the bulk carrier M/V Vega Rose, with a length overall of 189.9 meters and a breadth extreme of 32.26 meters, has a load capacity of 55,711 tonnes. It is registered in Panama and operated by Fednav Intl and chartered by Bunge Intl. During its stay in Trois-Rivières, the vessel was represented by Navitrans Shipping Agencies Inc.
