KYIV, UKRAINE — Polish farmers stopped their months-long protest at the last border crossing with Ukraine on April 29, Reuters reported.

Truckers and farmers have blocked border crossings since fall, expressing concerns with unfair competition and cheap grain. They said the government didn’t take any action to prevent a loss of business to foreign competitors since Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Ukraine’s border guard spokesman told Reuters that Polish farmers had ended the blockade at the Rava-Ruska crossing on April 29.

“Fortunately, we have all directions on the border with Poland unblocked,” said Andriy Demchenko, the border official, adding that trucks were crossing in both directions.

The Polish farm ministry said farmers had announced a suspension after talks with Agriculture Minister Czeslaw Siekierski.

It’s not clear if the suspension will hold, with a local farmers’ organization saying protests could be resumed if necessary.

Farmers are continuing talks with the government and still plan a protest in Warsaw on May 10, Reuters said.

Poland decided earlier this month to pay millions in subsidies to farmers to compensate for low grain prices.
