BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA – Argentina produced a record wheat crop of 21.8 million tonnes in the 2021-22 marketing year, according to a Jan. 18 report from the Buenos Aires Grains Exchange. The previous record was 19 million tonnes harvested in 2018-19.

The report said this year’s national average wheat yield of 3.44 tonnes per hectare was 21.9% higher than the previous season and 11.5% higher than the five-year average.

The Exchange said timely rainfall was the primary reason for the production increase.

Argentina is South America’s largest wheat producer and exporter, shipping about 13 million tonnes per year, mostly to neighboring Brazil.
