AMMAN — A fire in the main silo at Syria’s Tartous port on Nov. 29 caused major cracks in the structure and forced the relocation of its entire wheat stockpile to other locations across the country, Reuters reported, citing state media said.

The fire was caused by an electric circuit. A total of 35,000 tonnes of wheat stored at the silo were undamaged.

A total of five injuries were reported by workers who were offloading a vessel carrying wheat, Reuters said.

The country has recently struggled with sufficient wheat supplies for Syria’s bread production. In late October, Hussein Arnous, prime minister of Syria, said domestic wheat purchases are only enough to produce bread for the next month and a half.
