Top 10 Largest U.S. Mills, by capacity

Here are the top 10 largest wheat and durum mills in the United States, based on capacity. All data is from Sosland Publishing Company’s 2019 Grain & Milling Annual.

North Dakota Mill and Elevator Association in Grand Forks, North Dakota, is the largest mill in the United States, by capacity. Its combined wheat and durum capacity is 52,500 cwts. The facility includes eight milling units, a terminal elevator and a packing warehouse to prepare bagged products for shipment, according to the company’s web site.

The Ardent Mills facility in Hastings, Minnesota, is the second largest with a capacity of 32,500 cwts. According to Ardent it was the first operating mill in Minnesota and also the first all-roller mill in the United States. It was originally powered by the Vermilion River.

The Mondelez mill in Toledo, Ohio, comes in at No. 3 with a capacity of 31,000 cwts. Mondelez International, Inc. is one of the world’s largest snack companies.

ADM Milling in Beech Grove, Indiana, is the fourth largest mill with a capacity of 28,000 cwts. The mill is the largest of the company’s 23 facilities, which have a combined capacity of 285,900 cwts.

Ardent Mills has another facility in the top 10 list, coming in at No. 5 with its Wichita, Kansas, location. The mill, which has a capacity of 27,000 cwts, is the only facility in the United States to produce aleurone commercially, according to Ardent. Aleurone is an all-natural ingredient developed to help food manufacturers create healthier whole grain foods that appeal to more consumers.

The General Mills facility in Kansas City, Missouri, also has a capacity of 27,000 cwts. The mill is the largest of the company’s five wheat flour mills, which have a total capacity of 77,500 cwts.

Miller Milling in Winchester, Virginia, comes in at No. 7 with a capacity of 26,500 cwts. Miller Milling was founded in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1985, and in 2012, it became a part of the Nisshin Seifun Group of Japan. The company has six mills with a total capacity of 106,000 cwts (5,500 cwts alternates with durum).

The Ardent Mills facility in Kenosha, Wisconsin, also has a capacity of 26,500 cwts. The mill serves more than 75% of the Chicago and Milwaukee areas, according to Ardent.

Another Ardent Mills facility comes next, this one in Saginaw, Texas, with a capacity of 26,000 cwts. Fun fact: The facility was the broadcasting location of a famous 1940s western swing band called the Light Crust Doughboys.

The final mill in the Top 10 list is Bay State Milling in Winona, Minnesota, with a capacity of 24,100 cwts. The family-owned company has been providing flour and grain products since 1899. The Winona mill is the largest of its seven facilities, which have a combined capacity of 79,320 cwts.
