Largest U.S. wheat-durum-rye milling companies

Here are the top 10 largest U.S. wheat-durum-rye milling companies based on milling capacity. All information is based on Sosland Publishing Company’s 2020 Grain & Milling Annual.

Ardent Mills

Ardent Mills is the largest company with a total capacity of 491,200 cwts. That includes 485,200 cwts of wheat capacity at 33 mills; 10,000 cwts of durum at two mills; and 2,000 cwts of rye at one mill (6,000 cwts is swing capacity). ADM Mendota Mill

ADM Milling Co. comes in at No. 2 with total capacity of 287,200 cwts at 21 wheat mills. Pictured here is the company’s facility in Mendota, Illinois, U.S., which, at 30,000 cwts, is the largest mill ever built from the ground up in the United States.
Grain Craft

The third largest milling company based on wheat-durum-rye capacity is Grain Craft with a total capacity of 161,500 cwts. It has 14 wheat mills. Miller Milling Saginaw

Miller Milling is the fourth largest company with total capacity of 106,000 cwts. That capacity is divided among six wheat mills with a capacity of 106,000 cwts and two durum mills with a capacity of 18,500 cwts, which is swing capacity. The company completed a two-year expansion project that increased daily flour production capacity at its Saginaw, Texas, U.S., mill (pictured here) by 70%, from 14,000 cwts to 24,000 cwts.

Coming in at No. 5 is Bay State Milling with a total capacity of 85,665 cwts divided among seven wheat mills (capacity of 77,545 cwts); two durum mills (capacity of 4,900 cwts); and two rye mills (capacity of 3,220). Of its total, 1,320 cwts is swing capacity.

General Mills Inc. is the sixth largest with total capacity of 80,500 cwts, with 77,500 cwts capacity at five wheat mills and 3,000 cwts of durum at one mill.
North Dakota Mill
