TEHERAN, IRAN — Iran has offered to transfer wheat from India to war-torn Afghanistan, the Economic Times reported on Jan. 9.

The offer comes as talks between India and Pakistan have failed to reach an agreement in which Pakistan would allow the transfer of Indian wheat through its country to Afghanistan.

The Iranian government issued a statement in which the country’s foreign minister announced “measures and cooperation by Iran to transfer this aid in the form of wheat, medicine to the country.”

With Afghanistan’s economy collapsing under Taliban rule, the United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP) estimates that more than half of the country’s 40 million people likely will face acute food shortages and nearly 10 million are already on the brink of starvation.
