WASHINGTON, D.C., U.S. — North American Millers’ Association (NAMA) President Mary Waters announced on Nov. 17 that Sherri Lehman will join NAMA as director of government relations on Dec. 1.

"Sherri will serve as the NAMA staff liaison on food safety," Waters said. “She brings a wealth of experience to our organization. Sherri will be a strong advocate for our members on the issues of nutrition and food safety. She knows our industry, knows the issues and is enthusiastic about applying her skills and experience to the needs of NAMA members. She has strong relationships with our industry advocacy partners and we look forward to having her work on our behalf in these issue areas that are so important to our members.”

Lehman will lead the development and implementation of programs to support NAMA’s research strategy and programs that support public policy affecting nutrition and food safety. She will support efforts to promote enhanced demand for nutritional food products in the U.S. food aid program and build coalitions with key stakeholder groups.

For more than 20 years, Lehman has worked on agriculture, food, trade, nutrition and food safety issues for members of Congress and other associations. Lehman came to Washington in 1985 to work for an Illinois congressman. She then joined the Corn Refiners Association where she developed close working relationships with congressional staff and industry stakeholder groups.

In 2003, she joined the National Food Processors Association that later merged with the Grocery Manufacturers Association. While there she worked on the Child Nutrition Act reauthorization, FDA food safety programs and directed all efforts on health and wellness.

“This is a perfect fit for me. I know the industry and the issues. I am excited about applying my skills and experience to the needs of NAMA members,” said Lehman.

Lehman earned a bachelor’s degree in science of government from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois, U.S., before coming to Washington. She is a member of Women in Government Relations, the Agribusiness Club of Washington and previously served on the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) Food and Beverage Industry Group and as a USDA appointee to the Agricultural Technical Advisory Committee for Trade in Sweetners and Sweetner Products. She resides in McLean, Virginia, U.S.
