WASHINGTON, D.C., U.S. — The average price paid for white pan bread in the U.S. increased 2.1¢per pound in December, while the price for whole wheat bread decreased 5.4¢ per pound, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.

The national average retail price of white pan bread was 131.6¢, up 2.1¢ per pound from November but down 4.6¢ from December 2016. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in December increased in three regions — up 7.2¢ in the West, up 3.9¢ in the Northeast and up 0.5¢ in the South — and decreased in one region — down 1.2¢ in the Midwest.

At 197¢ per pound, the national average price for whole wheat bread was down 5.4¢ per pound from November but up 1¢ per pound from December 2016.

The national average price of family flour in December was 46.2¢ per pound, down 0.7¢ from November and down 4.1¢ from December 2016.

The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in December was 123.5¢ per pound, down 0.7¢ from November and down 5.2¢ from December 2016. Chocolate chip cookies were 360.1¢ per pound, down 3.8¢ from November but up 19.2¢ from December 2016. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 71.1¢ per pound, down 0.1¢ from November but up 1.8¢ from December 2016.
