Analysts await spring rainfall and weather conditions.

LINCOLN, NEBRASKA, U.S. — The U.S. Drought Monitor showed a minimum of abnormally dry conditions across nearly the entire hard red winter wheat region as of Dec. 28.

Moderate to severe drought was evident in south central and southwest Kansas, western and southeast Oklahoma and parts of Texas. In the soft red winter wheat region, abnormally dry to severe drought conditions were reflected across parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, up the Atlantic Coast, southern Illinois and all of Arkansas and Missouri.

Analysts note, however, that spring rainfall and weather conditions are more significant in determining winter wheat yields than are winter moisture conditions. Several states will issue crop updates for December in the first week of January.
