MANHATTAN, KANSAS, U.S. — New changes in animal feed regulation resulted in the
NGFA-KSU Food Safety Modernization Act feed industry training course hosted at the IGP Institute Conference Center. Cassie Jones, assistant professor at Kansas State University (KSU), along with a team of KSU faculty and alumni joined with the National Grain and Feed Associa¬tion (NGFA) to offer training to 55 industry professionals Nov. 14-16, 2016.

The preventative controls for animal food training curriculum was developed by KSU in collaboration with faculty from North Carolina State University, with oversight from industry partners and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Key topics covered in the course included: the applicability of the Preventative Controls for Animal Food rule, the requirements for Current Good Manufacturing Practices, and the items needed in a food safety plan, such as hazard analysis and preventive controls.

“We are very pleased with the outcome of the course,” Jones said. “The participants reported the curriculum was helpful for them to understand the Preventive Controls for Animal Food rule of FSMA and applying its requirements to their facilities.”

This course was unique compared to other courses where the curriculum is only for certification as a Preventive Controls Qualified Individual, because it also included HACCP training. Participants gained two certificates of training – one from the Food Safety Preventa¬tive Controls Alliance and one from the International HACCP Alliance.
