ROTTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS — Louis Dreyfus Co. on Aug. 16 said it will temporarily suspend soybean processing activities at its Jataí (Goiás) and Ponta Grossa (Paraná) units in Brazil. The company said the decision to halt operations reflects “current supply and demand conditions in the market.”

“The company will use this interval to perform annual asset maintenance,” Louis Dreyfus said.

Louis Dreyfus has had a presence in Brazil for more than 70 years, and operates 60 industrial and logistical units with 14,000 employees during harvest.

The company transports grains through several major ports in the country, including Itaqui (Maranhão), Exports Corridor (Santos-Sao Paulo), TEG (Guaruja-Sao Paulo), Paranaguá (Paraná), Tubarão (Espitiro Santo), Rio Grande (Rio Grande do Sul), and Aratu (Bahia).

On its web site, Louis Dreyfus said its Brazilian oilseeds operations include the soybean, cottonseed and groundnut markets.

“We market our own brands of refined soybean oil (Vila Velha and Valência), and have the cottonseed meal (Pagador) and peanut meal (Mandubi) brands,” the company said. “We are among the largest soybean originators, processors and exporters in Brazil.”
