SAMSUN, TURKEY — Turkey’s Ulusoy Flour Mills is spending $10 million to expand production capacity and aims to export half of its output to Africa and Southeast Asia, Bloomberg reported on May 18.

Capacity is being expanded by 600 tonnes to 1,700 tonnes a day, Gunhan Ulusoy, chairman of the parent company Ulusoy Un Sanayi Ve Ticaret AS, said at a grains conference in Dubai. The project should be completed by March, he said. Exports would be increased to countries including Angola and the Philippines, he said.

Turkey is the world’s largest wheat flour exporter at 2.8 million tonnes last year, with 1.1 million tonnes sold to Iraq, he said.

“By the end of November 2015, Turkey’s flour mill exports increased by 26% and exceeded 2.5 million tonnes compared to the same period of last year,” said Gunhan. "This is an important record for our sector and development that will strengthen our first line in world trade.”

Gunhan said they analyze global developments, the risks and opportunities for the company. It is growing fast in exports and will close the year with sales figures above expectations in domestic markets. He also said the growth rate is bigger than projections, especially in sales from production. Sales of $1 billion will have been passed by the end of 2015 as a result of these improvements.
