WASHINGTON, D.C., U.S. — The average price paid for white pan bread decreased 2.7¢ per lb in August while the price of whole wheat bread fell 0.7¢ in the month, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.

The national average retail price of white pan bread was $1.42, down 2.7¢ per lb from July but up 2.4¢ from August 2014. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in August decreased in three regions — down 4.3¢ in the South, down 4.2¢ in the West and down 3.2¢in the Midwest — and increased in one region — up 2.9¢ in the Northeast.

At $1.95 per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was down 0.7¢ per lb from July and down 11.6¢ per lb from August 2014.

The national average price of family flour in August was 52.4¢ per lb, up 0.9¢ from July but down 0.7¢ from August 2014.

The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in August was $1.35 per lb, up 2.6¢ from July but down 2.4¢ from August 2014. Chocolate chip cookies were $3.23 per lb, down 7.2¢ from July and down 14.2¢ from August 2014. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 66.9¢ per lb, down 0.4¢ from July and down 6.8¢ from August 2014.
