WASHINGTON — U.S. 2015 all wheat production was estimated at 2,051,752,000 bushels, down 84,287,000 bushels, or 4%, from 2,136,039,000 bushels forecast in August but up 25,442,000 bushels, or 1%, from a revised 2,026,310,000 bushels in 2014, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) said in its Sept. 30 Small Grains 2015 Summary.
With the exception of durum, average trade expectations were below USDA estimates for all classes of wheat. Wheat futures traded about 5¢ to 6¢ a bushel higher after the report was released, with added support from a lower-than-expected USDA Sept. 1 wheat stocks estimate.

All wheat yield was estimated at 43.6 bushels an acre, down 0.5 bushels from 44.1 bushels in August and down 0.1 bushels from 43.7 bushels an acre in 2014.

The USDA all wheat production number was below average pre-report trade estimate of 2,139 million bushels.

Production of spring wheat other than durum was estimated at 599,080,000 bushels, down 21,901,000 bushels, or 4%, from 620,981,000 bushels forecast in August, but up 4,042,000 bushels, or 1%, from 595,038,000 bushels a year ago. The average yield was estimated at 46.3 bushels an acre, down 0.7 bushels from 47 bushels in August and down 0.4 bushels from 46.7 bushels in 2014.

The USDA other spring wheat number was below the average trade expectation of 625 million bushels.

Production of hard red spring wheat was estimated at 564,107,000 bushels, down 11,870,000 bushels, or 2%, from 575,977,000 bushels in August but up 8,564,000 bushels, or 2%, from 555,543,000 bushels in 2014. Hard white spring wheat production was estimated at 5,526,000 bushels, down 4,738,000 bushels, or 46%, from 10,264,000 bushels forecast in August and down 3,417,000 bushels, or 38%, from 8,943,000 bushels in 2014. Soft white spring wheat outturn was estimated at 29,447,000 bushels, down 5,293,000 bushels, or 15%, from 34,740,000 bushels forecast in August and down 1,105,000 bushels, or 4%, from 30,552,000 bushels in 2014.

Durum outturn was estimated at 82,484,000 bushels, up 5,704,000 bushels, or 7%, from 76,780,000 bushels forecast in August and up 28,428,000 bushels, or 53%, from a revised 54,056,000 bushels in 2014. Durum average yield was estimated at 43.5 bushels an acre, up 3.3 bushels from 40.2 bushels an acre in August and up 3.3 bushels from a revised 40.2 bushels an acre in 2014.

The USDA durum number was above the average trade expectation of 78 million bushels.
The USDA estimated winter wheat production at 1,370,188,000 bushels, down 68,090,000 bushels, or 5%, from 1,438,278,000 bushels in August and down 7,028,000 bushels, or less than 1%, from a revised 1,377,216,000 bushels in 2014. The USDA estimated winter wheat yield at 42.5 bushels an acre, down 0.7 bushels from 43.2 bushels in August and down 0.1 bushels from 42.6 bushels an acre in 2014.

The USDA winter wheat number was below the average trade expectation of 1,432 million bushels. Hard red winter wheat production was estimated at 826,913,000 bushels, down 29,087,000 bushels, or 3%, from 856,000,000 bushels in August but up 88,263,000 bushels, or 12%, from a revised 738,650,000 bushels in 2014. Soft red winter production was estimated at 359,055,000 bushels, down 29,855,000 bushels, or 8%, from 388,910,000 bushels in August and down 95,476,000 bushels, or 21%, from a revised 454,531,000 bushels in 2014. Hard white winter wheat outturn was estimated at 15,914,000 bushels, up 3,423,000 bushels, or 27%, from 12,491,000 bushels forecast in August and up 4,368,000 bushels, or 38%, from a revised 11,546,000 bushels a year earlier. Soft white winter wheat production was estimated at 168,306,000 bushels, down 12,571,000 bushels, or 7%, from 180,877,000 bushels in August and down 4,183,000 bushels, or 2%, from a revised 172,489,000 bushels in 2014.

The USDA hard red winter wheat number was below the average trade expectation of 856 million bushels and the soft red winter number also was below the trade average of 384 million bushels.
Oats production was estimated at 89,535,000 bushels, up 9,527.000 bushels, or 12%, from 80,008,000 bushels forecast in August and up 19,303 bushels, or 27%, from a revised 70,232,000 bushels in 2014.

Average oats yield was estimated at a record 70.2 bushels an acre, up 2.3 bushels from 67.9 bushels in 2014. The 2015 barley crop was estimated at 214,297,000 bushels, up 4,607,000 bushels, or 2%, from 209,690,000 bushels in August and up 32,755 bushels, or 18%, from a revised 181,542,000 bushels last year.

Rye production was estimated at 11,496,000 bushels, up 5,307,000 bushels, or 60%, from 7,189,000 bushels in 2014.
