WASHINGTON, D.C., U.S. — Taiwan is coping with widespread damage including power outages, deaths, injuries and agricultural losses in the wake of Typhoon Soudelor, which hit the island nation on Aug. 8.

Taiwan’s Council of Agriculture (COA) estimated a total of $103.9 million ($3.34 billion NT) and 42,261 hectares (104,429 acres) in losses and crops affected. The damage is due to the torrential rainfall and winds that reached 133 to 149 kilometers per hour, measuring to level 13 winds on the Beaufort wind force scale, which measures wind speed in relation to conditions at sea or on land.

According to the COA, the banana and animal industries were heavily affected with the amount of damage recorded as the sixth highest on record. The destruction of agricultural facilities was not far behind with more than $12 million dollars in damages.
