OTTAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA — The 2011 Grain Industry Symposium, jointly sponsored by the Grain Growers of Canada and the Canada Grains Council, is planned Nov. 22-23 at the Delta Hotel and Suites, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

The theme of the event is, “A Time of Change: Increasing Opportunities for Canada’s Grain Industry.”


Gerry Ritz, minister of Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada, is scheduled to lead a discussion of the significant changes underway in Canada’s grain industry and the opportunities they create. This includes new marketing systems for wheat and barley, implementation of railway service review, development of new low level presence policies and new approaches to encourage increased crop research.

Geoff Honey, chief executive officer of Grain Trade Australia, is scheduled to speak on Australia’s experience fro moving from a monopoly wheat seller to an open market system. He will address what has been the impact along the supply chain, what lessons were learned, what could have been done differently and what opportunities were missed.

Other topics to be covered include marketing opportunities, transportation concerns, policy initiatives, trade issues and crop research funding.
