WASHINGTON, D.C., U.S. — The average price paid for white pan bread in the U.S. increased 1.2¢ per lb in September while the price of whole wheat bread climbed 5.2¢ in the month, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.

The national average retail price of white pan bread was $1.43, up 1.2¢ per lb from August and up 2.7¢ from September 2014. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in September increased in two regions — up 3.2¢ in the South and up 1.8¢ in the Midwest — and decreased in two regions — down 1.6¢ in the Northeast and down 0.7¢ in the West. 

At $2 per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was up 5.2¢ per lb from August but down 5.7¢ per lb from September 2014.

The national average price of family flour in September was 51.7¢ per lb, down 0.7¢ from August but up 0.4¢ from September 2014.

The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in September was $1.28 per lb, down 6.9¢ from August and down 6.8¢ from September 2014. Chocolate chip cookies were $3.36 per lb, up 13.3¢ from August and up 3.3¢ from September 2014. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 66.2¢ per lb, down 0.7¢ from August and down 8.4¢ from September 2014.
