WASHINGTON, D.C., U.S. — U.S. 2014 all wheat production was estimated at 2,035,373,000 bushels, up slightly from 2,029,638,000 bushels forecast in August and down 99,606,000 bushels, or 11%, from 2,134,979,000 bushels in 2013, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) said in its Sept. 30 Small Grains 2013 Summary.

The USDA all wheat production number was above average pre-report trade estimate of 2.033 billion bushels.

All wheat yield was estimated at 43.8 bushels an acre, down slightly from 43.9 bushels in August and down 3.3 bushels from 46.3 bushels an acre in 2013.

Production of spring wheat other than durum was estimated at 600,753,000 bushels, up 28,192,000 bushels, or 5%, from 572,381,000 bushels forecast in August, and up 66,652,000 bushels, or 12%, from 534,101,000 bushels a year ago. The average yield was estimated at 46.9 bushels an acre, up slightly from 46.1 bushels in August and down slightly from 47.1 bushels in 2013.

Production of hard red spring wheat was estimated at 737,937,000 bushels, up 9,123,000 bushels, or 1%, from 728,814,000 bushels in August and down 9,436,000 bushels, or 1%, from 747,373,000 bushels in 2013. Hard white spring wheat production was estimated at 11,490,000 bushels, up 191,000 bushels from 11,299,000 bushels forecast in August and up 430,000 bushels, or 4%, from 11,060,000 bushels in 2013. Soft white spring wheat outturn was estimated at 30,552,000 bushels, down 2,184,000 bushels from 32,736,000 bushels forecast in August and down 2,422,000 bushels, or 7%, from 32,974,000 bushels in 2013.

Durum outturn was estimated at 57,094,000 bushels, down 3,421,000 bushels, or 6%, from 60,515,000 bushels forecast in August and down 882,000 bushels, or 2%, from 57,976,000 bushels in 2013. Durum average yield was estimated at 41.6 bushels an acre, down 1.1 bushels from 42.7 bushels an acre in August and down 1.7 bushels from 43.3 bushels an acre in 2013.

The USDA durum number was below the average trade expectation of 61 million bushels.

The USDA estimated winter wheat production at 1,193,234,000 bushels, down slightly from 1,195,176,000 bushels in August and down 122,620,000 bushels, or 9%, from 1,315,854,000 bushels in 2013. The USDA estimated winter wheat yield at 42.6 bushels an acre, down 0.5 bushels from 43.1 bushels in August and down 4.7 bushels from 47.3 bushels an acre in 2012.

The USDA other spring wheat number was above the average trade expectation of 572 million bushels.

Hard red winter wheat production was estimated at 737,937,000 bushels, up 9,123,000 bushels, or 1%, from 728,814,000 bushels in August and down 9,436,000 bushels, or 1%, from 747,373,000 bushels in 2013. Soft red winter production was estimated at 455,297,000 bushels, down 11,065,000 bushels, or 2%, from 466,362,000 bushels in August and down 111,184,000 bushels, or 20%, from 566,481,000 bushels in 2013. Hard white winter wheat outturn was estimated at 11,490,000 bushels, up 191,000 bushels from 11,299,000 bushels forecast in August and down 430,000 bushels from 11,060,000 bushels a year earlier. Soft white winter wheat production was estimated at 172,802,000 bushels, down 17,465,000 bushels from 190,267,000 bushels in August and down 43,186,000, or 20%, from 215,988,000 bushels in 2013.

The USDA hard red winter wheat number was above the average trade expectation of 728 million bushels, and the soft red winter number was below the average trade estimate of 470 million bushels.
