ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA, U.S. — U.S. Rice mills shipped nearly 11 billion pounds of rice to domestic and international markets from August 2011 to July 2012 according to the annual USA Rice Federation U.S. Rice Domestic Usage Report, which tracks shipments and consumption of U.S. milled rice.

Of the shipments, 59% of total shipments went to the domestic market and 41% were exported. Of the U.S. rice shipments, 59% went to direct food use and 41% went to food processors. Of the direct food use, 30% went to retail grocery, 27% went to ethnic distributors, 19% for foodservice and 16% to repackers.
Eighty-two percent of all rice consumed in the U.S. is domestically grown, and 18% is imported.
