WASHINGTON, D.C., U.S. — U.S. 2013 all wheat production was estimated at 2,127,520,000 bushels, up 13,435,000 bushels, or  less than 1%, from 2,114,085,000 bushels forecast in August but down 138,507,000 bushels, or 6%, from 2,266,027,000 bushels in 2012, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) said in its Sept. 30 Small Grains 2013 Summary.

The USDA all wheat production number was above the average pre-report trade estimate of 2.121 billion bushels.

All wheat yield was estimated at a record 47.1 bushels an acre, up 0.9 bushels from 46.2 bushels in August and up 0.8 bushels from 46.3 bushels an acre in 2012.

Production of spring wheat other than durum was estimated at 531,739,000 bushels, up 20,459,000 bushels, or 4%, from 511,280,000 bushels forecast in August, but down 10,220,000 bushels, or 2%, from 541,959,000 bushels a year ago. The average yield was estimated at a record 46.8 bushels an acre, up 4 bushels from 42.8 bushels in August and up 1.8 bushels from 45 bushels in 2012.

Production of hard red spring wheat was estimated at 488,604,000 bushels, up 13,781,000 bushels, or 3%, from 474,823,000 bushels in August but down 15,916,000 bushels, or 3%, from 504,520,000 bushels in 2012. Hard white spring wheat production was estimated at 10,502,000 bushels, up 1,528,000 bushels, or 17%, from 8,974,000 bushels forecast in August and up 2,037,000 bushels, or 24%, from 8,465,000 bushels in 2012. Soft white spring wheat outturn was estimated at 32,633,000 bushels, up 5,150,000 bushels, or 19%, from 27,483,000 bushels forecast in August and up 3,659,000 bushels, or 13%, from 28,974,000 bushels in 2012.

The USDA other spring wheat number was above the average trade expectation of 509 million bushels.

Durum outturn was estimated at 61,528,000 bushels, up 1,328,000 bushels, or 2%, from 60,200,000 bushels forecast in August but down 21,268,000 bushels, or 26%, from 82,796,000 bushels in 2012. Durum average yield was estimated at 43.3 bushels an acre, up 3.2 bushels from 40.1 bushels an acre in August and up 4.5 bushels from 38.8 bushels an acre in 2012.

The USDA durum number was above the average trade expectation of 60 million bushels.

The USDA estimated winter wheat production at 1,534,253,000 bushels, down 8,352,000 bushels from 1,542,605,000 bushels in August and down 107,019,000 bushels, or 7%, from 1,641,272,000 bushels in 2012. The USDA estimated winter wheat yield at 47.4 bushels an acre, down 0.4 bushels from 47.8 bushels in August but up 0.1 bushels from 47.3 bushels an acre in 2012. The 2013 average winter wheat yield was the second highest on record, below only 47.8 bushels an acre in 1999, the USDA said.

Hard red winter wheat production was estimated at 744,029,000 bushels, down 47,335,000 bushels, or 6%, from 791,364,000 bushels in August and down 255,976,000 bushels, or 26%, from 1,000,005,000 bushels in 2012. Soft red winter production was estimated at 564,907,000 bushels, up 22,762,000 bushels, or 4%, from 542,145,000 bushels in August and up 145,106,000 bushels, or 35%, from 419,801,000 bushels in 2012. Hard white winter wheat outturn was estimated at 11,154,000 bushels, down 706,000 bushels, or 6%, from 11,860,000 bushels forecast in August and down 2,017,000 bushels, or 15%, from 13,171,000 bushels a year earlier. Soft white winter wheat production was estimated at 214,163,000 bushels, up 16,927,000 bushels, or 9%, from 197,236,000 bushels in August and up 5,868,000 bushels, or 3%, from 208,295,000 bushels in 2012.

The USDA hard red winter wheat number was below the average trade expectation of 792 million bushels and the soft red winter number was above the average trade estimate of 545 million bushels.

Oats production was estimated at 66,025,000 bushels, down 9,185,000 bushels, or 12%, from 75,210,000 bushels forecast in August but up 2,001,000, or 3%, from 64,024,000 bushels in 2012. The 2013 oats crop was the third lowest on record.  

The 2013 barley crop was estimated at 215,078,000 bushels, down 2,467,000 bushels, or 1%, from 217,545,000 bushels in August and down 5,206,000 bushels, or 2%, from 220,284,000 bushels last year.

Rye production was estimated at 7,669,000 bushels, up 725,000 bushels, or 10%, from 6,944,000 bushels in 2012. The average yield was estimated at 27.6 bushels an acre, down 0.4 bushels from 28 bushels last year.
