KAMPALA, UGANDA — The government of Uganda plans to revive the Uganda Grain Milling Co. (UGMC) in an attempt to streamline the export of grains and pulses, according to The Daily Monitor.
The group would be under a new name, the National Commodity Co., said Evelyn Anite, state minister for finance in charge of investment. She said restarting the group is part of broader efforts to organize farmers, improve post-harvest handling and ensure proper storage and quality management.
UGMC was a flagship enterprise of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government that came to power in 1986. In the 1990s, it was sold to the now-defunct Greenland Bank.
The Grain Council of Uganda said it welcomed the government’s decision to revive the regulatory body, which it said would help the government understand the challenges faced by the grain industry.
“When government comes in, they’ll help enforce quality control, ensuring only aflatoxin-free grain is milled and exported,” said Robert Mwanje, chairman of the grain council.
