ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA, US — CHS Inc. has increased the capacity and speed of its Myrtle Grove Terminal at Belle Chasse, Louisiana, US, by 30% for moving grain with the completion of a $105 million upgrade and expansion that also better equips the facility to load vessels with more than one commodity.
CHS said that key improvements include:
- Six additional concrete silos, adding capability and efficiency for more products;
- A new bulk weighing and grading system with flexibility for three grain flows;
- A new dock and barge unloading system for increased efficiency;
- The first permanent E-Crane dedicated exclusively to grain exports in the United States. This electric-powered crane will reduce energy costs and improve efficiency.
CHS, the largest farmer-owned cooperative and a global agribusiness in the United States, said the upgrades also add to the handling capacity for soybean meal and distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS). The terminal can now load vessels with more than one commodity more quickly with a mix of grains and grain byproducts for global customers.
The facility receives grain such as corn, soybeans and wheat by barge and rail and loads barges and vessels from its location on the Mississippi River 25 miles south of New Orleans, Louisiana.
“The strategic location of the Myrtle Grove facility will help CHS export more grain with increased precision, supporting volume growth to benefit the entire supply chain from farmers’ fields to global markets,” said John Griffith, executive vice president of the agriculture business at CHS. “Faster, more efficient loading and unloading helps CHS connect owners with more customers around the world.”
CHS serves customers in 65 countries and employs about 10,000 people worldwide, providing crop inputs, market access and risk management services through its agronomy, grains, foods and energy businesses. CHS said its global network of terminals moves about 2 billion bushels of grain annually.
With 230 grain storage facilities and 403 million bushels of licensed grain storage, CHS is the second largest grain handling company in North America as listed in Sosland Publishing Co.'s 2025 Grain & Milling Annual.
