CAIRO, EGYPT — Egypt’s wheat production is expected to increase 1.1% in 2021-22 with an increase in total harvested area, according to a report from the Foreign Agricultural Service of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Wheat production is estimated at 9 million tonnes from a harvested area of 1.4 million hectares.

Imports are estimated to increase 2.14% to 12.4 million tonnes. The largest suppliers to Egypt include Russia, Ukraine and the EU.

Corn production is estimated at 7.44 million tonnes, up 16.25% from 2020-21, due to the rise in total area cultivated, the USDA said. Higher corn prices in the local market prompted farmers to shift to corn, especially with government restrictions on rice plantings.

Corn imports are estimated to drop 4.1% to 9.3 million tonnes.
