The silo was officially opened by Martin Schuldt, head of Cargill’s business in Romania, at an event attended by Marius Balu, president of Mehedinti county council, local authorities, Cargill employees and customers. The new grain silo — now fully operational — allows Cargill to collect and store grain produced by farmers in Mehedinti and surrounding counties such as Dolj, Caras - Severin and Timis.
Cargill has been active in the Romanian grain and oilseed industry since 1996. Since then, the company has made a number of significant investments and today employs about 750 people in the country. The Drobeta silo, reactivated for the first time since 1999, will contribute to Cargill’s existing operations by extending the company’s current supply network and coverage in Romania and abroad. In addition, its storage volume of 44,000 tonnes will increase Cargill’s operational silo capacity in Romania by 8% and will help connect grain from Western Romania to new markets, through the unit’s proximity to the Danube River.

The silo undertook an intensive modernization program to comply with the highest operational, environmental and safety standards. This has required significant investment from our company and the result has been entirely successful. It further facilitates our ability to be a reliable and trusted buyer, storer and mover of crops for our partners in Romania.”
The silo will employ up to 20 people, in addition to the indirect employment created by the modernization program.
