SOFIA, BULGARIA — Bulgaria’s grain production has been negatively impacted by continued dry weather, according to a Global Agricultural Information Network report from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Bulgaria’s 2020 wheat harvest totaled 4.63 million tonnes, a 21% decline from marketing year 2019-20. According to the Bulgarian Ministry of Agriculture wheat’s average yield was 24% lower than last year. The USDA attributes lowered wheat production to dry weather during critical development stages.

Similar to wheat, Bulgaria’s corn production was hampered by dry weather despite record amount of corn planted. The USDA reduced its corn production forecast to 3.3 million tonnes for market year 2020-21.

The USDA holds its barley production forecast at 570,000 tonnes for market year 2020-21.
