ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN — Pakistan will import 300,000 tonnes of wheat in an attempt to curb flour shortage issues facing the country, according to Reuters.
Recent increasing flour and bread prices caused bread makers to shut down in protest hoping to force the Pakistani government to control prices.
The import decision was approved by the Economic Coordination Council and the first shipment is expected in mid-February.
According to Reuters, Pakistan’s Finance Ministry will waive regulatory duties on the grain that could be shipped in until March 31.
Many remained stumped as to why Pakistan exported wheat after poor crop yields in the most recent harvest, Reuters reported.
The opposition party leader, Khawaja Asif, told Reuters he suspects the wheat crisis is the result of a scam.
