Since 2007, no U.S. DDGS was imported in Peru due to a misclassification of DDGS by Peruvian import authorities. This issue has since been resolved through a joint effort by the USGC and the U.S. agricultural attaché.
Gloria, the largest dairy processor in Peru, is reported to have purchased 3,500 tonnes for sale to its dairy producers with the remainder being sold to the poultry sector. This second sale followed quickly on the heels of the council’s recent workshop promoting DDGS to the dairy sector in May.
During that workshop, there was a tremendous interest in increasing demand for DDGS. This will be the first shipment that will be destined for Peru’s dairy sector.
The council is now discussing with Gloria how a series of feeding trials and workshops can be conducted to accelerate the adoption and use of DDGS in the dairy sector. The council will also organize a poultry nutritionist to travel to Peru in July to continue working with the poultry industry and maintain pressure for the poultry sector to become more active in the procurement of DDGS.
