GAMBIA — The Aspuna Flour Mill and Processing Factory recently opened in Duwasu Village in the Kombo East District of the West coast region in Gambia. The mill will process cassava into flour and starch, which will be sold in local markets and exported, according to an article in theForoyaa.

Amadou Jah, country director for Aspuna, told the Foroyaa that the mill will be able to produce about 500 kg of flour and starch per hour. The mill features equipment from China, he said.

Jah said it cost 20 million dalasi ($423,710) to outfit the mill.

“The reason why I decided to spend this huge amount of money to establish such a project is to assist young people to stay and work for their country,” he told the newspaper. “In the Gambia, we need value chain in order to bring development, and this should start with the farmers, who are the backbone of the country’s economy. I want to introduce cassava as another cash crop in the country.”
