Millers receive diplomas from Swiss School of Milling

ST. GALLEN, SWITZERLAND — Twenty-four young specialists from 15 different countries received their diplomas and certificates from the Swiss School of Milling St.Gallen (SMS) on Feb. 16, ending a 10-month training to become executive grain milling technologists. 

The SMS is globally one of the most prestigious international training institutions within the field of grain milling technology. It offers specialists from across the world expert training in this area. 

The packed curriculum of the 55e3 course was characterized by its broad range of theoretical subjects and its strong practice orientation. In his diploma speech Michael Weber, the principal of the SMS, noted that this was the first international course held in the new SMS in St.Gallen where the Swiss School of Milling moved to after 55 years at the Tellstrasse. 

“We are able to teach and train you in different subjects regarding milling. Even it is a lot, in comparison to the learning life is preparing for you it is only a little bit. We prepared you to take allot challenges, now it is up to you,” Weber said. 

Martin Schlauri, head Grain Milling at Bühler AG, Uzwil, Switzerland, stressed in his speech that it is very important to apply the know-how into the daily work because striving for operational excellence all available skills are necessary. 

It is important as well, he said, “to transfer your knowledge to your team members and your staff. Every company’s strength is the performance of its team.”

In his speech he made the students aware, that it is important to understand why something has to be done, why something is working and how the process looks like. 

He then presented the Dr. René Bühler Award, which goes to the best in class of each course. This year the award went to Xenofon Mantzouris from Greece. 

The SMS was set up 55 years ago by the global Bühler Technology Group, which continues to offer it substantial support. It is state independent, which allows freedom in the choice of the school program; changes can be made at any time so that the latest developments can be considered immediately. Since its foundation, over 1,000 students have been trained at the Swiss School of Milling to become grain milling technologists.
