M├╝hlenchemie leaders participate in food workshop

ABIDJAN, IVORY COAST — Mühlenchemie was a supporting partner at the food fortification workshop initiated by UNICEF and Hellen Keller International this September in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
Mühlenchemie said it contributed its expertise and technical advice on flour fortification to the event. The company joined about 100 other people representing industry, NGOs and the public sector to develop new guidelines for better supplies of fortified food in West Africa.
For years Mühlenchemie GmbH & Co. KG has taken a keen interest in the battle against malnutrition especially in developing countries. Besides listening to technical talks by practitioners, users, and the representatives of public facilities, participants gained valuable new insights from practical sessions and demonstrations on how to regulate and determine the quality of fortified food.
One other core aspect of the workshop was to develop a new food fortification concept. Industry representatives, NGOs and public sector entities, for example the West African Economic and Monetary Union, UEMOA, collaborated as partners to develop the guidelines. The intention is that both the industrial and the public sectors are to receive support in the field of quality assurance and control mechanisms for fortified food.
One focus topic at this symposium was the fortification of a staple food, i.e. flour, with essential vitamins and minerals. The Mühlenchemie experts demonstrated how to ensure a good and regular level of fortification into flour. This fortified flour will ensure that the human body receives an adequate supply of nutrients and thus prevent malnutrition and disease.
Mühlenchemie and the partners at the workshop have made it their task to work together toward achieving better fortified food supplies in developing countries. Increasing numbers of West African governments have passed laws decreeing that flour have to be fortified with vitamins and minerals. Already, several million West Africans are benefiting from this health program.
