IAOM Annual Meeting

Hundreds of milling professionals from across the world are expected to convene for the International Association of Operative Millers’ (IAOM) Annual Conference & Expo May 19-23 at the Omaha Hilton Hotel and CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Nebraska, U.S.
The event for grain milling professionals includes comprehensive education programs, networking events and an expo featuring the latest technology in the industry.
Educational and technical programs presented at the conference assist millers in improving yields, productivity, customer satisfaction and safety. The programs are presented by seasoned professionals in the field who have experienced the issues affecting millers first-hand.
In addition, the conference includes one of the world’s largest expos for milling professionals, typically featuring more than 100 companies displaying milling and processing equipment and related services.
The conference begins on Monday, May 19 with the IAOM board of directors meeting and a half-day Food Protection Committee meeting.
Conference registration begins at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, May 20 along with exhibitor move-ins starting at 8 a.m. Committee meetings are scheduled throughout the day.
The Allied Trades Reception with the IAOM board of directors is planned from 3 to 4 p.m., followed by an opening reception.
The conference officially kicks off on Wednesday, May 21 at 7:30 a.m. with the IMEF Breakfast with Keynote Address by North American Millers Association (NAMA) President and Chief Executive Officer Jim McCarthy. He will discuss NAMA’s future plans and the importance of education and training.
The Expo opens at 9:15 a.m. with a ribbon cutting. Product showcases begin at 10 a.m. and continue throughout the day. IAOM received such positive feedback, an additional presentation was added on Thursday, May 22.
“We will still have passports that attendees can get stamped when they attend a Product Showcase presentation, so they are eligible to participate in a raffle to win the Product Showcase prize,” said Melinda Farris, IAOM executive vice-president.
The International Milling Education Foundation’s (IMEF) Silent Auction will open on the Expo flour on Wednesday, May 21. The auction will close at the Annual Banquet & Awards Ceremony on May 22.
The education program begins after lunch on Wednesday with presentations addressing three categories — product protection, technical operations and employee/facility management. Educational sessions are also scheduled for Thursday morning. Two sessions will focus on the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).
After a hiatus since 2007, the Allied Trades Event is returning on Wednesday at the Upstream Brewing Company in the Old Market Entertainment District. A bus service will provide transportation between the Hilton Omaha Hotel and the Upstream Brewing Company from 5:30-9:30 pm.
The 21,000-square-foot converted 1904 firehouse includes dining spaces, two floors with bars and a rooftop deck. Enjoy handcrafted house beers along with appetizers while spending time with other IAOM attendees.
Thursday begins with the Annual Meeting and Safety Award Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. IAOM Safety Award recipients will be honored for their hard work and dedication during the breakfast. To be eligible for a safety award this year, a facility must have a recordable injury/illness rate less than or equal to 2.1 and have no work-related fatalities in the calendar year of 2013. Applications for the awards were taken through March 1.
This year, facilities that have received the safety award for several consecutive years will be recognized, Farris said.
“All facilities will continue to receive Safety Awards if they’ve met the qualifications. However, special recognition will be given to these consecutive-year locations,” she said.
The final product showcase and educational sessions are scheduled for the rest of the morning, followed by district and leader meetings. The awards ceremony is planned during the closing banquet at 7 p.m. at the Omaha Hilton.
On Friday, the conference wraps up with the Annual Golf Tournament at the Shoreline Golf Course.
The IAOM Annual Banquet & Awards Ceremony on May 22 will honor and pay tribute to its award recipients. The evening starts at 6 p.m. with a reception and music sponsored by Premier Tech. During the reception, the IMEF silent auction will close out.
The evening will feature a program that includes the passing of the gavel and presentation of IAOM awards. Advance tickets are $75 and may be purchased through IAOM during registration. Tickets purchased after the early-registration deadline of April 16 will be $85.
The 2014 Milling Operative of the Year award will be presented during the ceremony. Nominations for the award were accepted through March 1.
Established in 1986 by Milling & Baking News, sister publication of World Grain, the award is presented to the practicing milling operative who has made the most significant contribution to the progress of a plant, a company and the industry from an operating point of view.
The winner will receive an inscribed plaque, and a scholarship will be established in the winner’s name at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas, U.S.
Tim Carroll, Pendleton Flour Mills, Blackfoot, Idaho, U.S., was the recipient of the 2013 award.
Throughout the conference, attendees will have an opportunity to make bids in the 4th Annual International Milling Education Foundation (IMEF) Silent Auction. Donations to the auction are made by milling companies, individuals, partner organizations, equipment and service suppliers, and others.
Proceeds from the auction support the learning, knowledge and resources provided by the IMEF. Last year’s auction raised $50,000.
Nearly 100 companies are expected to display the latest products and services at the IAOM Expo. Expo hours will be from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21 and 8:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. on Thursday, May 22.
Like last year’s event, there are three sessions of unopposed exhibit time, meaning there will be no educational programming during that time. Unopposed exhibit time is planned from 9:15 a.m. to noon on Wednesday; and from 8:30 to 10 a.m. and 12:30 to 2:45 p.m. on Thursday.

Registration is available online at www.iaom.info/annualmeeting/online-registration/. A copy of the registration form can also be printed from the website. Cost for the full conference is $500 for IAOM members and $575 for non-members.
A block of rooms has been reserved for IAOM participants at the Hilton Omaha for a special rate of $129. A limited number of rooms are available, and April 16 is the last day for the special rate. The hotel is in the heart of downtown Omaha.
