The 14th Victam Europe feed exhibition and conference finally took place last November at the Utrecht Trade Fair in the Netherlands. Postponed from April, when foot and mouth disease was still taking its toll on much of European agriculture, Victam doubled up with the animal husbandry show, VIV, boosting the number of exhibitors to 800 from around 200 and providing extra value for the more than 50,000 visitors who attended the combined shows.
The organizers divided the show into separate areas for feed production, ingredients, aquaculture and grain processing, but it was feed processing technology that dominated, and is what the European feed industry comes to see every three years at Victam.
At the previous Victam Europe, the theme had been "Clean Feed, Clean Food," and this was very much the trend again in November. New developments in technology were aimed at improving feed safety and hygiene (see the article "Hotter, Bigger, Better" on page 26.).
Clean feed was featured prominently in Victam’s first innovation awards. Winners were selected by an independent jury from processing, machinery and nutrition categories. In the processing section, Bühler held off Amandus Kahl’s Ecoprocessor system for energy recovery and emission reduction and DSL System’s AutoPilot4Feed process control system to win with its batch system for heat-treating meal. Although thermal treatment of meals is not new, Bühler’s batch approach ensures sterilization of the equipment and automatic cleaning of the entire process line to give maximum protection from re-contamination.
Bühler’s Newtronic roller mill was also nominated for the best innovation in machinery, but the award went to IVS Dielissen from the Netherlands for its Pirouette cross-flow vertical dryer. The Piroutte dryer’s batch design was designed to meet hygiene demands, as was the adaptation to HACCP regulations. The first in, first out principle ensures a full separation of products. Dead zones are avoided by the special spreader-action, which makes the Piroutte a unique dryer.
The one deviation from the feed safety theme was the winner of the nutrition category, Format International from the U.K., with its New Century Integra feed and food optimization software. Integra allows true optimization of a range of multi-level product specifications. The organizers were impressed with the 250,000 raw materials, specifications and recipes available in the database.
The date for Victam’s next European feed show has yet to be announced but it is likely to be early 2004. If you can’t wait that long, visit Victam Asia in Bangkok, Jan. 30-Feb. 1; Victam China in Beijing, April 24-26; Victam Turkey in Istanbul, June 6-8; or Victam Iran in September or October.
