Turkey's principal holiday resort area on the Mediterranean, the ancient city of Antalya, will be the site of the 2000 conference and trade show of the Association of Operative Millers' Middle East and East Africa District 16. The 12th annual event will be held Oct. 9-11.
Organizers expect nearly 500 people, which would be double the attendance of last year's A.O.M. Middle East and East Africa meeting in Amman, Jordan. That conference drew about 250 people from 31 countries.
This year's conference program will include a variety of speakers and topics. Ilker Tanik, of the Turkish Flour Milling Association, and M. Hikmet Boyacioglu, a professor in the Department of Food Engineering at Istanbul Technical University, will discuss the state of the flour milling industry in Turkey. Dr. Boyacioglu and his wife, Dilek Boyacioglu, who also is a professor at Istanbul, will talk about food safety in Turkey's flour milling industry.
Anna Verster, director of health promotion for the World Health Organi-zation's East Mediterranean Regional Office in Alexandria, Egypt, and Quentin W. Johnson of Quican Inc., Rockwood, Ontario, Canada, will make presentations on the importance of wheat flour micronutrient fortification.
Walter Bruggmann of Buhler Ltd., Uzwil, Switzerland, will discuss the critical success factors of tomorrow's milling industry. David Ritchie, president of Rocky Mountain Flour Milling, Platteville, Colorado, U.S., will talk about producing and marketing organic flour.
Technical sessions about products and services for the milling industry will be given by Klaus Velten, Buhler Ltd., "The Newtronic roller mill"; U. Diener, Agromatic Ltd., Zurich, Switzerland, "New technologies in moisture measuring, sensors and elevator controls"; and Bob Kice and Syed Ashraf of Kice Industries, Inc., Wichita, Kansas, U.S., "Kice short flow mill" and "Kice automation group," respectively.
The trade show will draw equipment manufacturers, ingredient suppliers and grain traders from around the world as well as U.S., Canadian and Australia wheat associations. Of the more than 100 booths available in the trade show, more than half have already been reserved.
