SRW suffers lower yields and quality; HRW lower proteins

WASHINGTON D.C., U.S. — Rain and cool temperatures in June and July interrupted the soft red wheat harvest in the U.S., giving rise to lower yields and reduced quality.
U.S. Wheat Associates’ final crop report said test weight for the 2003 crop is 76.7 kg/hl compared with 77.9 kg/hl for the 2002 crop. Thousand kernel weight is 31.6 g for the 2003 crop compared to 32.7 g for the 2002 crop. Sprout damage was observed in several areas. However, much of the crop remained sound with falling numbers above 300 seconds, only slightly lower than last year.Vomitoxin levels range from 0.0 to above 2.0 ppm. Protein content ranged from a low of 8.2% (12% mb) to a high of 14.85% (12%mb). The 2003 crop average of 10.2% (12% mb) is nearly 0.3% lower than the 2002 harvest. The moisture content is averaging 13%, which is 0.5% above last year.
Test weight and damaged kernels were the two contributing factors that had the most effect on the overall grade. There was a range in the test weight from 68.6 to 80.2 kg/hl. While damaged kernels varied from 0.0% to 11.1% with the final crop average of 76.5 kg/hl and 3.4% damaged kernels with total defects at 4.2%. The crop average remains as a number 2 SRW.
For hard red winter wheat, the average protein content is lower than in 2002 with the average at 11.8% compared to 13.4% last year. Average wheat moisture is 11.8%, slightly higher than in 2002, which was 11.2%. Test weight is higher than last year at 79.3 kg/hl while 2002 test weight was 77.5 kg/hl. The average grade is 1 HRW and the average falling number of 425 indicates a sound crop.
