GENEVA World Trade Organization Director-General Renato Ruggiero on April 14 said his farewells to members of that organization's General Council. Mr. Ruggiero retired at the end of the month after leading the W.T.O. for nearly all of its four years.
Mr. Ruggiero expressed pride in what the W.T.O. has achieved in the past four years, including two Ministerial Conferences and agreements to liberalize trade in telecommunications, financial services and information technology products.
W.T.O. Chairman Ali Mchumo of Tanzania urged delegates to intensify efforts to reach a consensus on a successor to Mr. Ruggiero.
