LAOS — Agriculture ministers from the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the ministers of the People’s Republic of China, Japan and the Republic of Korea have agreed to launch a pilot scheme for an East Asian rice reserve system aimed at ensuring regional food security. At their October meeting in Vientiane, Laos, senior ASEAN officials said a steering committee would be established to guide the implementation of the Pilot Project and that they had requested Thailand and Japan serve as the interim coordinators.
