The “Pyramid Approach” to dust control

   Martin Engineering, a world leader in making bulk solids handling cleaner, safer and more productive, has published a new book discussing solutions to control dust from conveyor transfer points. The new book, Foundations2: The Pyramid Approach to Control Dust and Spillage from Belt Conveyors, explores methods to improve the transfer points and belt conveyor systems to prevent the creation and escape of fugitive materials such as spillage, carryback or airborne dust.

   The 154-page hard bound book describes the use of a three-part “pyramid,” consisting of containment, suppression and collection systems, for successful control of fugitive materials. Included in the conveyor systems are chutes, belt support systems, skirtboard, dust seals, belt tracking, belt cleaners, dust suppression systems and dust collectors. The book explains that these systems all are related, and failure of one often may lead to failures elsewhere in the conveyor system.

   The book illustrates that the “Pyramid Approach” goes beyond the installation of new hardware systems to improve dust control and conveyor efficiency. It also emphasizes the importance of human elements to the control of fugitive material.

   These human factors — commitment, knowledge and service — stretch the hardware systems into a process that provides effective material control. These elements combined with the hardware in a balanced and integrated pyramid demonstrate a plant-wide commitment required for control of fugitive material.

   Foundations2 is a follow-up and expansion of Martin Engineering's 1991 book, Foundations: Principles of Design and Construction of Belt Conveyor Transfer Points. The first book deals with controlling spillage at conveyor transfer points through the use of a three-part system of improved belt support, wear liners inside the chute and effective, low maintenance skirtboard sealing. This three-part Foundations system has become the containment portion and “base” of the “Pyramid Approach.”

   Foundations2 draws on the experience of Martin Engineering in designing, building and upgrading hundreds of transfer points and conveyor systems to control airborne dust and spillage around the world.
