Nippon Flour Mills Co. is developing a simple colon cancer test kit suitable for home use, the company said recently.
Nippon said it would spend nearly 300 million yen (U.S.$2.4 million) over the next five years on the joint project with Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
A home inspection kit is expected to be launched as early as 2004. A DNA chip that help chooses the correct treatment for colon cancer also is being developed. Nippon said the two products are expected to have combined sales of 10 billion yen in the five years after their launch.
