New milling school opens in Venezuela

   Puerto Cabello, Venezuela — A new milling school, ESLAMO (Escuela Latinoamericana de Molineria), was recently dedicated at this Venezuelan port city to provide training in flour milling and related subjects for millers from throughout Latin America. ESLAMO is a joint venture of ASOTRIGO (Asociacion de Molinos de Trigo), the Venezuelan milling association; ALIM (Asociacion Latinoamericana de Industriales Molineros), the Latin American millers' association, and U.S. Wheat Associates, the U.S. wheat market development organization.

   ESLAMO fulfills the need for a formal flour milling training facility in Latin America that conducts courses in Spanish. Before the school was opened, many Latin American millers had been trained in-house by foreign consultants or at U.S. or European training facilities, which often posed language problems.

   ASOTRIGO funded the facility's construction and related costs. Equipment for the school's flour laboratories along with project consultants and coordination were provided by U.S. Wheat.

   The first training session at ESLAMO began in mid-August, comprising a four-week basic milling course for 24 millers. Mill management and milling refresher courses are scheduled for October and November at the facility.
