The safety of the global feed supply and the impact of the biofuels boom on the feed and poultry industries will be among the hot topics at the second annual International Poultry Expo/International Feed Expo Jan. 23-25 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.
More than 20,000 participants attended last year’s event, which marked the first time that the U.S. Poultry and Egg Association (USPEA) and American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) had co-located their respective expos. A similar turnout is expected at the 2008 event, which will feature attendees from more than 90 countries.
As of mid-November, nearly 900 companies that serve the feed and poultry industries had registered to exhibit their products and services at the Expo.
The Expo is one of 35 trade shows selected to participate in the U.S. Department of Commerce’s 2008 International Buyer Program. Under this program, the department’s U.S. Commercial Service recruits foreign buyer delegations from U.S. embassies abroad and brings them to trade shows in the U.S. to facilitate matchmaking with U.S. businesses exhibiting at the trade show.
This year’s Expo also features a new program designed to facilitate matching buyers with suppliers. The Buyer Connection Program will allow buyers to use a neutral area to meeting with IPE/IFE exhibitors. There is no charge, and the meeting rooms are available on a first-come, first-served basis for reservations.
"We have developed the Buyer Connection as a means for the attendees who are members of our organizations to have a place to meet in a neutral, professional setting conveniently located on the floor of the trade show with suppliers who are exhibiting," said Charlie Olentine, executive vice-president of the U.S. Poultry and Egg Association. "The freedom from distractions and sales pitches will enable the matchmaking process to be efficient and as stress-free as possible."

The Expo will once again feature "InfoMart Theaters" to keep attendees up-to-date on the newest products and services in the industry. Two theaters, one for processing and packaging and the other for feed and production, will be located on the trade show floor.

AFIA PET FOOD CONFERENCE AFIA and the Poultry, Protein & Fat Council are sponsoring a conference on pet food ingredient quality on Jan. 22 and 23, prior to the opening of the Expo.
All conference attendees will receive complimentary admission to the Expo. Topics to be discussed will include:
• A global perspective on the pet food industry and ingredient training;
• Melamine serving as a catalyst for focusing on ingredient quality;
• Consumer marketing of pet food;
• Ingredient and feed quality assurance;
• Quality aspects of poultry protein.
Pet food safety has been a hot topic in 2007 after U.S. health officials found that an ingredient imported from China contained melamine, a substance used to make plastic cutlery and fertilizer. Cats and dogs in the U.S. died of kidney failure after eating tainted food made by Menu Foods.
Retailers and food makers who accounted for 37% of the company’s pet food sales have halted orders because of the problems associated with the melamine contamination.
In view of the growing concerns about the safety of feed ingredient imports, more than a dozen bills relating to food safety have been introduced in the U.S. Congress.
Among the exhibitors at the IPE/IFE Expo, will be more than 100 supply equipment and services to the pet food industry.
Individuals who pre-register for the Pet Food Conference will receive a copy of the conference proceedings. The preregistration fee is $30 online or $40 by fax or mail. The pre-registration deadline is Jan. 5, 2008. The on-site fee is $50 payable only by credit card.
