Flour milling short course offers hands-on training

An upcoming flour milling short course presented by Kansas State University's International Grains Program offers a detailed study of flour milling principles and recent advances in flour milling technology.

The course will be held June 4-15, 2001 at the IGP Center, located on the KSU campus in Manhattan, Kansas, U.S. Among the topics to be covered include U.S. wheat production, the U.S. flour milling industry, grain grading, moisture testing, grain conditioning, principles of milling, grain cleaning and testing, mill quality control and mill engineering, and flour mill maintenance.

The IGP Center is equipped with audio equipment for simultaneous translation, a grain grading laboratory, a dockage separator and other equipment for hands-on learning.

"Throughout its 23-year history, IGP has developed an international reputation for providing high-quality, effective training programs for those involved in the procurement and use of U.S. grains and soybeans," said Brendan Donnelly, IGP director.

Since it was established by the Kansas legislature in 1978, the IGP has trained thousands of business and government leaders from throughout the world. Today, IGP-trained leaders can be found in every corner of the globe.

"IGP's training allows international participants to develop technical knowledge and skills in areas that allows them to be more informed purchasers and processors of U.S. grains and oilseeds," Donnelly said. "The training programs acquaint international business and government leaders with current trends and issues affecting the grain and oilseed industries."

Tours of grain elevators, flour mills and related industries are also planned during the course, in addition to case studies and laboratory demonstrations.

Lectures will be presented by faculty from KSU's Grain Science and Industry, Plant Pathology, Agronomy, and Agricultural Economics departments.

The registration fee for the flour milling short course is U.S.$1,100, which does not include transportation or hotel costs. The course is limited to 24 participants. A summary on the course is available on the IGP website at www.ksu.edu/igp.

IGP regularly schedules four short courses every year on feed manufacturing, flour milling, price analysis and risk management, and grain purchasing.
