The European Commission is inviting comments under the E.U.'s merger regulation on U.S.-based Cargill Inc.'s plans to acquire animal feed producer Agribrands International. The commission has until Feb. 19 to rule on whether to clear the operation or open a four-month in-depth investigation.
Cargill in December announced it had agreed to acquire Agribrands, which markets animal feed under the Purina and Checkerboard names, for approximately U.S.$580 million. Cargill plans to combine Agribrands with its Animal Nutrition unit. Together, the two businesses operate a total of 178 plants in 26 countries and employ nearly 9,500 persons worldwide.
