ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA — Because of crop damage from hailstorms, flash floods and droughts across Ethiopia last year, the Ethiopian Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Commission has appealed for 820,000 tonnes of food aid for 8 million people, including about 400,000 persons displaced by a border war with Eritrea.
The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization and World Food Program said Ethiopia's harvest was nearly 2 million tonnes short to feed the country's population of 60 million. The W.F.P. said Ethiopia needed its biggest shipment of food aid in eight years and would appeal for 650,000 tonnes of food.
