Carier supplies new grain export terminal in United Kingdom

   AVONMOUTH, BRISTOL, U.K. — A new 16,000-tonne grain export terminal at the Royal Portbury Docks in Avonmouth was completed in April 1998. T.H. White Installation Ltd., Devizes, Wiltshire, U.K., handled the design and installation of the intake, handling and silo storage and Carier Bulk Materials Handling Ltd., Braintree, Essex, supplied the conveying and elevating equipment.

   The cost of the project was not disclosed.

   The grain export terminal was completed in two phases beginning in November 1997. “We had to work to a clearly defined budget and strict timetable such that specification, duty and price were the key factors in the selection of machinery by Carier,” said Peter Webb, general manager of T.H. White.

   Twin 500-tph road intakes feed the existing quayside handling plant. The handling plant was linked, via a tandem belt conveying system, to 1,500-tonne hopper silos with underbin recovery routes to the shiploader.

   A sophisticated I.T. card reading system manages vehicle control in close association with the intake and handling operations, Carier said. Fast-acting roller doors activated by the card system allow carefully timed lorry access and contain the area while the lorries are tipped from the weighbridge and empty their grain into the adjacent intake hoppers. Dust emission is controlled by two reverse jet filters with remote coupled centrifugal fans.

   Material is transferred from the intake pits by two 500-tph chain and flight conveyors. Carier's high output, bottomless bucket elevators are used to discharge the intakes and feed the high-level silo conveyors. The chain and flight conveyors are equipped with motorized outlet slides and brushgear operated by linear actuators.

   All other handling utilizes Carier 900-mm enclosed Kleenbelt conveyors, with feed rates of up to 1,000 tph. All equipment was fitted with rotation speed monitoring and given a hot dip galvanized finish to combat the dockside environment, Carier said.

   The 1,500-tonne hopper silos — 12 meters in diameter and 30 meters tall — are the largest of their type in the U.K, Carier said. Cartridge-type, reverse-jet spot dust filters are fitted on all elevators and at all transfer points. A central aspiration system, designed by T.H. White, provides dust control to the main tower elevators and adjacent conveyors through a main filter.
