The modernized grain elevator at the Port of Beaumont was expected to move more than 1 million tonnes by the end of 2000, Port Director Don Allee said recently.
With U.S.$10.3 million in renovations, the elevator's per-hour receiving capacity doubled to 80,000 bushels. The port also improved rail access to the elevator and overall operating efficiency and safety. Louis Dreyfus, which took over the elevator's remaining 16-year lease this past December, added U.S.$400,000 in its own improvements.
