Association of Operative Millers 101st annual meeting set for May 3-7.

   From vomitoxin in wheat to violence at work, the Association of Operative Millers 101st annual technical conference and trade show promises a wide range of topics relevant to the flour milling industry worldwide.

   The event opens May 3 in Nashville, Tennessee, U.S. Committee meetings run all day on Saturday, with the Latin American Technical Session scheduled in the afternoon.

   The grand opening of the trade show is set for 11 a.m. Sunday, immediately following the conclusion of the popular “What's New?” program, featuring 12 papers describing new products and services. A box lunch and drawing are features at the Sunday trade show session.

   Frederick E. Cooper, an executive with CooperSmith, Inc., will deliver the keynote address at the Monday breakfast. That session will emphasize the conference theme of developing leadership for the next century.

   Technical sessions scheduled throughout the conference run the gamut. In addition to discussions on wheat diseases, wheat breeding and quality testing and grading, speakers will present information on milling practices, wheat tempering and energy requirements in the mill.

   The Tuesday evening annual banquet will feature awards presentations and entertainment. Because Nashville is known for its country music industry, social events and entertainment throughout the meeting will carry a “country” motif.

   All trade show space in the Nashville Convention Center is booked, and visitors will be able to see more than 90 exhibitors displaying equipment and services in more than 120 booth spaces.

   In conjunction with the A.O.M. trade show, World Grain offers the following information from companies serving the flour milling industry, many of whom will be exhibiting at the event.

Buhler grain processing technology

   The foundation for high quality end products is efficient cleaning, and for first class product deliveries, the base is high performance bagging. For profitable working conditions, energy savings are important, and for professional production management, computer based modular automation is key.

   Buhler Ltd., Uzwil, Switzerland, and Buhler Inc., Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S., are exhibiting equipment and software to give every trade show visitor the opportunity to keep informed about the latest technologies in the grain processing industry.

   Among the many technologies featured are the scourer MHXS combined with the air-recycling aspirator MVSQ, which reduce bacteria counts in wheat and improve the filth count. The bag placer MWAC guarantees reliable, high-speed automatic bagging over an extended period of time.

   The automatic air flow controller MAVH matches air volume to pneumatic conveyor loading, optimizing power requirements, while the new Buhler software package MELE controls the process from wheat intake to finished product loading and dispatch.

Codema grain and milling services, equipment

   Codema offers a variety of sieve and pan cleaners available for the most demanding applications. All triangular sieve cleaners start out with a durable yet elastic body material of high quality polyurethane meeting U.S. Food and Drug Administration specification 175.105.

   Standard cleaners are then fitted with a metal slider rivet that promotes dynamic, vibratory movement and will not come loose. These cleaners will not become brittle and break apart with age, insuring a long life of effective cleaning with a minimum of frame wear, product contamination and little or no fumigant absorption.

   Three different styles are available, each in a large and small size. The molded stud cleaner is molded in one piece, including the projecting studs, and is effective for all wire mesh and synthetic cloths from 200 micron and upwards. This is considered our “general-purpose” model, with the small version being our most popular sieve cleaner.

   The white bristle model provides a higher degree of cleaning efficiency over the molded stud model, and is best suited for synthetic cloths. The bristles are held in place by a durable new magnetic thread, which is molded completely into the cleaner body.

   The black bristle model is the same as the white bristle, except that this bristle type is intended for use on wire mesh.

   In addition, Codema also has traditional cotton belt sieve cleaners available, cut from high-density single stripe belting, then de-fringed and fitted with a metal slider rivet.

   Codema also has ball sieve cleaners available, including tan rubber balls, 16 millimeters in diameter, in 1,000 count cartons; white natural gum rubber balls, also 16 mm in diameter in 1,000 count cartons; and polyurethane balls in diameters from 13 mm up to 50mm, 100 piece minimum.

Entoleter modern mixing methods

   A modern mixing system must provide a uniform, intimately homogeneous mix while reducing processing time and costs, as well as improve the quality of the finished product. The answer to many mixing and dispersion problems is the CentriMix, a centrifugal mixer manufactured by Entoleter, Hamden, Connecticut, U.S.

   The CentriMix can provide greater capacity at higher efficiency with free-flowing dry or slurry mixtures. Equally adaptable to continuous or batch operation, the CentriMix assures full homogenization with thorough and consistent blending and complete dispersion of trace ingredients.

   Ordinary mixing methods fail to deagglomerate, and in some instances may even cause small nodules or agglomerations to form. Entoleter has the ability to break-up and eliminate these clusters and agglomerates during the mixing process.

   The unique capabilities of the CentriMix are a result of its ability to apply high energy directly to the product, making possible finer, more uniform blends that are not otherwise attainable at comparable cost. The high intensity impact is very effective for coating applications including those with coatings requiring low grade heat. Impact action can be adjusted to provide increased surface area of the particle while simultaneously applying the coating.

   Advantages of Entoleter centrifugal mixers include greater efficiency and lower cost; practically the entire horsepower input is transferred directly to the product; better uniformity and quality; high capacity and compact size; and ease of cleaning and maintenance.

   The CentriMix produces finished mixtures at rates from 1 to more than 50 tonnes per hour. The Entoleter centrifugal mixer can be used to supplement ribbon type blenders by shortening premix time in batch operations. With the use of accurate metering devices, instantaneous mixing and blending occurs.

   The Entoleter CentriMix is simple to install in an existing system, requires a minimum of floor space or can be ceiling mounted, and is complete within itself. All models of the Entoleter CentriMix can be adapted for open processing or dust-free closed systems.

Favini high temperature stabilization

   Favini Impianti, Bergamo, Italy, presents an innovative process to cook and stabilize cereals and legumes using a high pressure steam heat treatment. The process assures a high degree of product uniformity and simplifies management through automation of control operations that up to now were carried out in batch. The innovation includes a new continuous retort, designed, patented and manufactured by the company.

   Cooking is the key operation in the preparation of several semifinished and finished products, such as toasted soy, cereals flakes, beans, chickpeas, stabilized legumes, pre-cooked wheat and couscous.

   During heat treatment, a product's chemical and physical properties are altered. Starch structure is modified, making subsequent cooking easier and faster; aromatic characteristics are elevated; color changes; and elimination of microbes assures long lasting product preservation. Each product and each kind of utilization by the customer requires different treatment conditions.

   The difficulties of this process arise from the need to maintain a high degree of uniformity during treatment in order to obtain repeatable and constant color, taste, texture and performance during subsequent cooking. Most important is avoiding overtreatment that would result in unacceptable burning or blackening of the product.

   The heat exchange kinetic is obviously affected by the product's relative moisture, which is not merely a parameter of the raw material to be processed. In fact, relative moisture changes constantly during cooking because of steam condensation on the surface of product particles. Furthermore, it is necessary to eliminate the excessive condensate, which is the main cause of lumps and overcooking (starch chain denaturation).

   Some moisture gradients (condensate percolation) will always exist in traditional batch treatment plants where a thick product layer must be conditioned. These gradients are the main cause of the above-mentioned burning and, generally, of a lack of product uniformity within a batch.

   Because of the difficulty of reproducing process parameters in a sequence of several batches, producers face problems when a customer requires a standard product that consistently must comply with a specific quality level.

Filip sieve and rollermill cleaners

   Filip GmbH, Gutersloh, Germany, manufactures high quality sieve cleaning brushes, sieve cleaners with studs, bottom cleaners for plansifters and rollermill brushes.

   The products meet the most stringent of demands. Their special merits include long service life, based on the use of high-grade raw materials and high quality workmanship; effective and optimized sieve cover cleaning, based on the use of specially adjusted brush material or studs combined with the design of the cleaner body; and resistance to all climatic conditions.

Fundiciones Balaguer mill rolls

   Fundiciones Balaguer is pleased to announce that construction of its new factory, shown in the accompanying photo, is well under way. The new plant building, located in Onil, Spain, will manufacture mill rolls for flour, semolina, compound feed and vegetable oil processing.

   The new building, fully equipped with the latest in high technology, will be operative in September, enabling the company to double its current production capacity.

Jaymark milling equipment

   The A.O.M. conference and trade show highlights new choices of products from Jaymark, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Known for efficient, cost effective, grease lubricated roller bearing conversion kits for rollermills, Jaymark is displaying two advances in milling technology.

   Spomasz FM05 horizontal rollermill, representing more than 100 years of milling machinery design and manufacture from Spomasz Milling Engineering Group, offers quality and options previously offered in only the most expensive rollermills. Special features include heaviest of all belt differential drives and tapered bore roller bearings for most severe reduction passages, as well as Festo pneumatics and A.C. variable speed feed rolls, controlled by Endress Hauser components for long, reliable service.

   The Ferkar Universal Mill is much more than a vertical hammermill. Patented knife design and air recirculation allows the Ferkar Mill to outperform other mills with incredible efficiency. For mill screenings, a Ferkar mill with as little as 10 horsepower matches output capacity of 50 h.p. hammermill systems without the use of filters, air locks, cyclones, blowers, pneumatic lifts or fans. Ferkar mills have proven to be consistently efficient mills for bran reduction with similar energy savings, while eliminating the hazards associated with other types of mills.

Golfetto cereal processing

   Seventy years of experience in the field of cereal treatment and processing is a guarantee of the technological and quality level attained by Golfetto machinery.

   Business activities of Golfetto S.p.A., Padova, Italy, range from the single machine supply to the design of complete turnkey plants, for both the milling industry and the food industry in general.

   Golfetto's engineering service is available to develop projects for new plants and revamping of existing ones, with a special concern for cereal plants, starting from product intake down to cleaning, grinding and packaging sections.

Opie mill brushes

   The Opie Brush Company, Kansas City, Kansas, U.S., has been the dominant supplier of mill brushes for the milling industry since 1883. The company has maintained this dominant position by designing and modifying its products with the suggestions and ideas of millers for all these many years.

   In December 1995, the company made a major change in the design and performance of its Roll Brush. The new design addresses three of the most important factors in selecting replacement roll brushes: cleaning performance, longer wearing time and cost.

   This has been accomplished by eliminating the prior method of hand stitching the fiber, which was done to make the brush as stiff as possible. By using machine stitching, we have created a very stiff, ridged brush. This brush will not “lay over.”

   Millers are now seeing better cleaning of the roll surface since they are brushing with the very tips of the fibers, as it wears all the way down. They say the brush is lasting longer because they are now using more of the fiber. By implementing new labor saving equipment, the cost has been reduced.

   Bob Campbell, president of Opie Brush, put this new brush in perspective.

   “The Roll Brush is a comparatively inexpensive product, but a very important item in the milling process,” he said.

   It is attached to a very expensive piece of equipment designed to yield the maximum output. If the grind capacity of the expensive roll stand is reduced by the poor performance of the roll brush, the miller's operating expense is increased unnecessarily.

   Millers now can realize lower operating costs in three ways: higher yield from the roll stand, less frequent down time in changing brushes and lower initial cost of the brush.

   Mr. Campbell says these new brushes have now been in most of the mills around the U.S. for just more than a year now, and the response has been very positive.

   This new brush will be formally announced at the A.O.M. “What's New?” program during the annual conference and trade show. Mr. Campbell invites all millers and attendees to visit Opie's booth No. 339 to inspect this new, cost effective Roll Brush.

Perten analytical equipment

   The Perten Instruments Group was originally founded more than three decades ago by Harald Perten, a cereal chemist by training. Mr. Perten's lifelong quest, and thus the goal of the company, Falling Number, was to provide rapid, meaningful and accurate analytical equipment for cereal grain producers, users and processors. Mr. Perten's vision is still thriving as Perten moves into the 21st century.

   Harald Perten founded the Swedish-based company with equipment that ultimately would become the world recognized standard for rapid determination of alpha amylase activity (sprout damage) in wheat and rye. The Falling Number method is endorsed as a standard method by the American Association of Cereal Chemists, the International Association for Cereal Science and Technology and the International Standardization Organization.

Vibronet cereal tempering systems

   The main advantages of the Double Deck Gravity Selector (Combinator), supplied by T.W. Barfoot, Hailsham, U.K., are two functions combined in one machine: separating grain into light and heavy fractions and removing stones.

Great Western sifters

   Great Western Manufacturing Co., Leavenworth, Kansas, U.S., is North America's leading manufacturer of sifters used in the cereal milling industry. This includes the Model HS free-swinging sifters and the single section Tru-Balance.

   The HS sifter is available from two to eight sections in three sieve sizes. Net sifting areas range from 0.24 to 0.47 square meters per sieve.

InterSystems bucket elevators, equipment

   Bucket elevators from InterSystems, Omaha, Nebraska, U.S., feature pillow block bearings, quick release hinged doors, safety labeling and detailed computer calculations. The self cleaning and gravity boot designs have a capacity of 1,500 cubic meters per hour. Bucket elevators are galvanized and made of stainless steel.
