AFIA*AGRO: Helping Latin American agricultural and livestock producers prosper in the 21st century

AFIA*AGRO de las Americas 2001 started in 1992 as a feed exhibition in Mexico by the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA). Today, the event is the largest international exhibition for Mexico's livestock and agricultural industry, encompassing all facets of those industries, from tractors to chemicals, plastics packaging, software, silos and grain elevators, fertilizer and irrigation equipment, and macro and micro feed ingredients.

This year's conference and trade show will be held March 8-10 at Expo Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.

The theme of "How to prosper and survive in the 21st Century" will be evident in several seminars to help farmers, ranchers and feed manufacturers throughout Latin America "make more money, increase productivity and provide safer products," organizers said.

Key issues focus on water and waste management as well as biotechnology and its impact for the future. The Mexican Association of Animal Nutritionists (AMENA) and the Association of Agricultural and Biotechnological Companies (AGROBIO) will present a six-hour seminar on genetically modified nutrition, plants and animals. Speakers from England will discuss new methods and development in the poultry sector, and the Mexican Pork Council (CMP) will hold a day-long seminar related to water and waste management for the pork industry.

Other seminars will include alternative and creative financing methods for the agricultural and livestock industries; maintenance and conservation of water in the agricultural and livestock industry; as well as specialized topics for dairy, chicken, cattle and swine producers.

The trade show and exhibition is supported by nearly all of the various national livestock and agricultural associations in Mexico. Fifty percent of exhibitors come from outside Mexico; conference organizers said the expo draws more U.S. companies than any other agricultural or livestock exhibition outside the United States.

"The signing of a commercial agreement between Mexico and the European Union is attracting many European companies who want to sell their products to Latin America and see Mexico as an entry point," organizers said. "There are several Latin American exhibitors who are taking advantage of recently signed commercial treaties."

More than 1,000 products will be on display.
