1996 World Grain Review

Since 1989, World Grain has published an annual summary of world trade activity in wheat, coarse grains and rice. Over the years, the review has been expanded to provide more information, comprising statistics on grain production, use, carryover stocks and price trends.

Features in this edition include the traditional tables and maps indicating key exporting and importing nations for cereals and major coarse grains, as well as a map of grain handling activity at major ports around the world. Marketing or calendar years were selected for the completeness of available statistics.

This edition also contains the "1995-96 world grain year at a glance," a table highlighting key supply and demand figures. The table underscores the exceptional nature of the most recent marketing year, when supplies of some grains, notably wheat and maize, declined sharply and prices moved to record highs.

Data on five-year trends offer a longer-term view of supply and demand statistics for each commodity, while world price charts for wheat, maize and soybeans provide perspective on the unusual price movements of 1995-96.

One traditional feature — wheat flour production by country — is not included this year, as the data were not available by press time. These figures will be published in an upcoming issue pending availability.
